We recommend that all SpaceSaver users upgrade to version 1.0.1.
Be sure to copy this archive (or the contents thereof) to a diskette and place it along with your master diskettes for safekeeping. You will need to use it if you ever need to reinstall StuffIt from your master diskettes.
How to use an Updater
--------------------
1) Launch the appropriate updater application.
2) You will be prompted to locate the file being updated. If you are running System 6, some files may be located in the System Folder, or the Extensions folder. If you are running System 7, some files may be located inside the Control Panels folder, or the Extensions folder.
3) Select the file and click the “Update” button.
4) You will be prompted to select a name for the updated version. For safety reasons, this updater will not modify your original copy of the file.
5) The updater will take a couple of minutes to create the updated version.
6) When the update is complete, you can throw away the older copy. Rename the new version with the same name as the old one (this will be just removing the version number if you used the original names). Make sure the new version is in the same location as the original.
After you have updated all of the files, restart your computer to load the new versions.

• Intensive file system operations could cause a system error. This occured when copying a large number of files, rebuilding a desktop file, and a few other situations.
• Certain backup applications and disk optimizers could cause SpaceSaver to lose track of a compressed file’s original type and creator.
• Improved handling of low disk space conditions.
• Label PopUp menu in control panel now handles “blank” labels.
• Removing .sit/.sea from non-archive caused name confusion in the Finder. This could result in a “file/folder not found” dialog until a restart.
• Attaching .sit to a folder of SS files did not always expand all compressed files before archiving.
• StuffIt SpaceSaver control panel sometimes did not appear under System 6.
• Files with names beginning with a period (.) no longer cause problems.
• Added a couple more applications to the internal list of backup applications, including DiskFit, DiskFit Pro and Redux 2.0. SpaceSaver will no longer expand files during a backup operation in these applications.
• Applications are no longer left expanded after a desktop rebuild.
• SpaceSaver is now more aware of changes to a file’s compressed state as keywords & labels are applied or removed to its containing folders.
Changes in Magic Menu 3.0.2
-------------------------
• Improved memory usage
• When running an international System 7, Magic will now properly locate the StuffIt Engine and the Compression Extension.
Changes in StuffIt Engine 3.0.2
----------------------------
• Fixed a problem encountered when accessed from SpaceSaver
• Added some new features for 3rd party developers using the Engine
When scanning a file that has been compressed by SpaceSaver, you may see a warning that “the resource fork is damaged or in an unknown format”. This message will only appear for files that do not have resource forks, and can be safely ignored as it is a result of SpaceSaver’s use of temporary files. Both John Norstad (Disinfectant) and Symantec (SAM) have fixed the problem and their next releases will include this fix.
System 6 w/o MultiFinder
-----------------------
If you are using System 6, but not running under MultiFinder, you will not be able to use the “.sit”/”.sea” aspects of SpaceSaver due to memory limitations. Magic Menu, however, works just fine and so you may use that method for working with archives in the Finder.
Virex 3.8.x
----------
Virex 3.8 and later can cause your Macintosh to lock up when the Finder is trying to load. You may also find that even if you get past the Finder that you may have problems in other applications. We recommend that you don’t run Virex and SpaceSaver together.
After Dark 2.0
-------------
We recommend that you enable the “System IQ” feature of After Dark when using it in conjunction with SpaceSaver. This will help them to work together.
WYSIWYG Menus
--------------
You will need to rename WYSIWYG Menus to load before SpaceSaver in order to use them both. You can also use an extensions manager to change the loading order without changing their names.
CEToolbox
---------
You will need to configure SpaceSaver to load before CEToolbox in order to use them both. You can also use an extensions manager to change the loading order without changing their names.
MasterJuggler
-------------
If you are using System 7, then this needs to load before Magic Menu, or you may get “Get Info” windows when using Magic Menu. Normally it would load first, but if you are using an extensions manager to reorder extensions, this may not be the case.
